Field Applications Engineer - BESS (M/F/X)

Octave is looking for a Field Applications Engineer - BESS to ensure our battery energy storage projects are technically sound from specification and procurement all the way to installation, commissioning, and reliable operation in the field.
Your role:
As Field Applications Engineer (BESS), you will be a key technical interface between Sales, Purchasing, Engineering, and our customers/installation partners.
- You support customers and partners during the installation, commissioning, and problem-solving of their battery energy storage systems.
- You provide technical support to Sales: validate use cases, review technical requirements, and support solution definition for BESS projects.
- You provide technical support to Purchasing / supplier selection: review and challenge technical specifications, ensure compliance with requirements, and support technical evaluation of BESS components and systems.
- You perform electrical and system integration engineering for BESS projects at customer sites (interfaces, protections, controls, grid connection considerations, documentation).
- You troubleshoot electrical, system-level, and software-related issues in collaboration with the software and operational teams.
- You deliver mainly remote support, with occasional on-site support whenever required.
- You document issues, solutions, and best practices to continuously improve internal processes, customer support and system reliability.
What we are looking for:
- A background as an electrical engineer (Bachelor or Master level, or equivalent experience).
- Knowledge of electrical systems, norms and regulations (electrical distribution and installation, transformers, earthing, protection equipment, AREI, …).
- Hands-on, problem-solving mindset with a strong sense of ownership.
- Knowledge of battery energy storage system (batteries, inverters, EMS).
- Experience with commissioning, troubleshooting, or field support of Low voltage (up to 1000VAC and 1500VDC) AC and DC systems. Holding a BA5 certification is a plus but can also be obtained on the job.
- Willingness to interact directly with customers and installation partners.
- Basic experience with or interest and willingness to learn:
- Linux bash, Python, Networking.
- You don’t need to be a software expert, curiosity and learning ability matter more.
- Fluent communication skills in English and either Dutch or French.

Software Engineer – Energy Management System (M/F/X)
We are looking for a Software Engineer – Energy Management System (EMS) with hands-on experience in designing, integrating, and operating EMS platforms that control real-world energy assets. This role focuses on asset integrations, control logic, monitoring, and reliability, across both cloud (AWS) and edge-deployed EMS software.
Octave is a cleantech scale-up on a mission to deploy advanced energy management and storage solutions for commercial and industrial customers.
Your role
- Design, develop, and maintain EMS integrations with on-site energy assets, including:
- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- EV chargers
- PV inverters
- Energy meters and other site equipment
- Implement and maintain communication using EMS-relevant protocols such as Modbus (TCP/RTU), MQTT, and REST APIs.
- Ensure every integrated asset is properly monitored, including:
- Asset state and measurements
- Communication health and fault detection
- Data quality and consistency checks
- Develop and improve EMS control logic, such as:
- EV charging load balancing and power allocation
- Coordination of batteries, PV, and loads to minimize grid import
- Site-level constraints, priorities, and fallback strategies
- Contribute to the evolution of the Octave EMS, running in AWS and on edge devices deployed on customer sites.
- Thoroughly test, validate, and debug EMS behavior in realistic scenarios, interpret results, and ensure stable long-term operation in production.
What we are looking for
- At least 2 years of experience in software development.
- Proven experience working on Energy Management Systems (EMS) or closely related energy control platforms.
- Strong experience delivering production-grade Python software.
- Hands-on experience integrating and controlling physical energy assets via industrial or IoT protocols.
- Solid understanding of monitoring, observability, and fault handling in systems that interact with hardware.
- Experience working with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL.
- Ability to work independently, take ownership of EMS components, and deliver high-quality solutions.
- Clear communication skills in English.
With some (or all) of the following points, you have a clear plus
- Experience with commercial or industrial energy systems (BESS, EV charging infrastructure, PV plants, metering).
- Experience designing EMS control strategies under grid, site, or contractual constraints.
- Experience developing software for edge or embedded Linux devices.
- Experience with AWS.
- Familiarity with field commissioning, on-site testing, or remote troubleshooting of EMS deployments.
- Experience working closely with energy engineers, operations teams, or asset vendors.

Business Development Manager – The Netherlands (M/F/X)
Do you want to play a key role in building a new market within a fast-growing cleantech scale-up? Are you an experienced Business Development Manager eager to make an impact in the energy transition, combining room for initiative with strong support from an experienced team?
Octave is looking for an experienced Business Development Manager to help shape the commercial launch of our battery energy storage and energy management solutions for SMEs and industrial companies in the Netherlands.
Your role
As Business Development Manager – The Netherlands, you will be responsible for setting up and expanding Octave’s presence in the Netherlands, in close collaboration with the existing sales team in Belgium.
You will:
- Develop and execute the go-to-market strategy for the Netherlands, supported by Octave’s commercial and technical teams in Belgium.
- You live within a 30-minute commute of the Randstad.
- Open doors, build relationships, and close the first commercial deals and partnerships.
- Work with installers, integrators, energy suppliers, asset owners, and industrial customers.
- Act as the link between market, product, and operations: the insights you gain in the field will be fed back to the team.
- Represent Octave at relevant events, trade fairs, and with key stakeholders.
- Lay the commercial foundation for building a Dutch organization in a later phase.
- If market traction is strong, this role will naturally grow into a Country Manager position.
Who you are
- You have extensive experience (7+ years) in B2B business development or sales within the energy sector.
- You understand how energy markets work (energy storage, flexibility, EMS, renewable energy).
- You have sufficient technical knowledge to engage in substantive conversations with engineers and partners.
- You have a strong “sales hunter” mindset with a proven track record in opening new markets or accounts.
- You have experience defining and executing commercial strategies in environments with limited existing structure.
- You work independently, take initiative, and thrive in a dynamic scale-up environment.
- You are results-driven, while also thinking strategically for the long term.

Senior Streaming Data Engineer (M/F/X)
We are looking for a pragmatic, hands-on Senior Streaming Data Engineer who enjoys building systems end-to-end and taking responsibility for how they perform in the real world. This role is ideal for someone comfortable wearing multiple hats, especially switching from data mindset to software mindset, making trade-offs, and prioritizing delivery over perfection in a fast-moving scale up environment.
Your role
- Design, build, and operate real-time data pipelines, continuously ingesting and processing event streams from our IoT device fleet in production.
- Deliver and maintain curated, pre-aggregated datasets that power both internal use cases and internet-facing analytics dashboards.
- Own technical design discussions end to end: work closely with product, engineering, and operations to translate business needs into robust data solutions, evaluate real-world constraints (cost, performance, reliability), and drive alignment on pragmatic trade-offs.
- Take responsibility for data systems in production, including data quality monitoring, alerting, incident follow-up, and supporting downstream data applications.
Who are you
- Proven production experience designing, building, and operating data systems, including:
- Real-time data pipelines and streaming use cases
- Batch ETL/ELT jobs
- Data migrations and system integrations
- Data modeling for analytical and operational workloads
Additional advantages
- Strong stakeholder collaboration skills: ability to lead technical discussions, translate business needs into technical solutions, balance constraints (cost, performance, maintainability), and drive consensus on pragmatic trade-offs.
- Solid implementation experience in Python and SQL, with a track record of delivering production-ready systems, including testing, deployment, and CI/CD integration.

- Familiarity with the AWS ecosystem, especially serverless services (or equivalent experience on another cloud provider).
- Exposure to technologies such as TimescaleDB, MQTT, pandas, and Protocol Buffers.
- Exposure to the energy management system (EMS) domain (asset management, energy markets, etc).

Fleet Operator Intern (M/F/X)
We are looking for a pragmatic Fleet Operator Intern who is eager to work close to real-world operations and take ownership of the performance of Octave’s energy assets. In this role, you will sit at the intersection of monitoring, incident response, and technical operations, contributing directly to the reliability of our battery systems, PV installations, and EV infrastructure. The position is well suited to someone hands-on, proactive, and comfortable switching between operational follow-up, data analysis, and technical configuration in a fast-moving scale-up environment.
Your Role
- Monitor the performance and availability of Octave’s fleet (Battery systems, PV installations, EV stations) using internal tools and dashboards
- Follow up on alerts and incidents, provide first-line support, and escalate complex issues when needed
- Perform ad-hoc data analysis related to failures, incidents, and overall Energy Management System (EMS) performance
- Provision and prepare controllers (Edgeboxes) for EMS deployment
- Perform software and firmware updates on battery systems
- Support the commissioning of new sites, including EMS configuration and validation
What We’re Looking For
- Currently pursuing a master’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a related technical field
- Proactive mindset
- A minimum duration for the internship of 3 months
